Wisdom for our times
"The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all."

- H. L. Mencken, via Quotes of the Day

Whenever I hear of Mencken I always think of his opinion of the Pittsburgh environs...

Conversely, when I'm passing through some run-down place east of Pittsburgh, I always think of Mencken.

That's new to me:

Now and then there is a house of brick. But what brick! When it is new it is the color of a fried egg. When it has taken on the patina of the mills it is the color of an egg long past all hope or caring.

He's my new hero!
